No. 4 West Chester Takes Down Adelphi, 4-1

WEST CHESTER, PA – Veerle Hersman (Lisse, The Netherlands) and Nina Scott (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) each scored two goals to lead fourth-ranked West Chester to a 4-1 victory over visiting Adelphi on a wet, soggy and humid day afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.

WEST CHESTER, PAVeerle Hersman (Lisse, The Netherlands) and Nina Scott (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) each scored two goals to lead fourth-ranked West Chester to a 4-1 victory over visiting Adelphi on a wet, soggy and humid day afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.

West Chester (4-1) scored twice in the last two minutes of the contest to break open an otherwise hard-fought non-league contest against Adelphi (1-3). It marked the fourth win of the season over a Northeast-10 opponent for the Golden Rams as well.

Hersman opened the scoring in the 19th minute when she converted a penalty stroke. That's the way things stayed until the second half when Scott tipped a blast from Hersman into the top right corner of the cage in the 37th minute to double the hosts' lead.

Adelphi fought back with its lone tally of the contest in the 50th minute on a nice back-hand diving shot from Kelly Johnson.

However, West Chester put the game away in the final two minutes of the contest with tallies from Hersman and Scott 31 seconds apart. Hersman penetrated into the circle, avoided a defender and ripped a shot into the left side of the cage with 1:47 left to play.

The Golden Rams came right back off the draw and Scott whacked a loss ball in the air into the hope right side to put the game away for the hosts.

West Chester goalkeeper Audra Szymborski (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) made five saves to pick up her fourth win of the year. Her counterpart, Allison Gregory, made six saves for the Panthers, who also registered a pair of defensive stops.

West Chester held a 15-9 advantage in shots and an 8-2 margin in penalty corners for the game.

The Golden Rams will be back in action Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. start against Newberry College (Newberry, S.C.).
