West Chester Women Claim PSAC Championship Again; Durkin Swimmer of Meet

CARLISLE, PA – West Chester University's women's swim brought home the conference crown at the 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Swimming Championships inside the Keystone Aquatics Center in Carlisle Saturday evening.
 
It marked the third straight team title for the Golden Rams and the 17th in the last 18 years. It was also the 21st overall championship for West Chester, which has dominated the PSAC swimming landscape for a little more than two decades. The Golden Rams have now won every conference championship in which it has entered since 2007. They did not compete in the 2021 conference meet due to COVID-19 restrictions.
 
Senior Keeley Durkin (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) was named the Swimmer of the Meet at the conclusion of the championships.
 
West Chester amassed 1,662 points in easily outdistancing second-place IUP, which put up 960. Bloomsburg was third with 833 points while Clarion was fourth with 830. Gannon finished fifth (696), Shippensburg sixth (631), Millersville seventh (489) and Edinboro eighth (405.5). East Stroudsburg placed ninth with 384.5 while Kutztown was 10th with 363. Cal U was 11th (293) and Lock Haven 12th (211).
 
Durkin opened the final session of the championship meet with her third straight conference crown in the 1650-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 17 minutes, 4.95 seconds. It was her fourth individual title of this meet and the 10th in her college career. Teammate and junior Danielle Stewart (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) was runner-up to Durkin in 17:11.21. Stewart was runner-up to Durkin in the mile for the second straight year. Senior Caitlin Hamill (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) was seventh in 17:44.33.
 
Senior Mikayla Niness (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished runner-up in the 100 free. She posted a time of 50.96. Classmate McKenzie Hemingway (Chestertown, Pa./Queen Anne County) placed fifth (51.89) and Samantha Trumble (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) was seventh (52.12).
 
Freshman Anna Evans (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) continued to shine in her first college conference meet by finishing runner-up in the 200 backstroke. Friday, Evans was runner-up in the 100 back. She was the lone Golden Ram in the 'A' final Saturday.
 
Junior Madelyn Koehle (State College, Pa./State College Area), runner-up in the 100 breaststroke last night, won the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.24. Sophomore Lenya Ryan (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) was runner-up in 2:17.57, and Isabella Kil (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) finished fourth with a time of 2:22.63.
 
The Golden Rams' 400 free relay concluded the PSAC Championship with a first-place effort in 3:24.14 that qualified them for the NCAA Championships.
 
West Chester will now wait and see how many swimmers qualify for the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships next month and join the 400 free relay.
