WEST CHESTER, PA – Lander scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to come from behind and defeat West Chester, 45-19, in a National Intercollegiate Rugby Association Tier II match on South Campus Saturday afternoon.
Katie Wallenburg (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) put the Golden Rams (2-4, 1-3 NIRA) on the board first with a penalty try in the 24th minute that made it 7-0.
Lander's Sami Trippi answered seven minutes later, but the conversion was no good.
Brooke Crago (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon Area) put the Golden Rams on top once again with a try that Ty Hickey (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) converted giving the hosts a 14-7 advantage. Lander's Jill Stewart busted over the try line in extra time and the score stood at 14-12 at the break.
Lander (5-2, 2-1) took control of the match early in the second half with a pair of trys five minutes apart. Tocarra Nelson scored on a long run down the near sideline five minutes into the half. That was followed by a try from Dakota Burguess, who bulled her way over the tryline underneath the goal posts. Isabella Gullatta (5 conversions) converted both trys, turning a 14-12 deficit at the break into a 26-14 lead.
Mya Alexander added a try later in the second half to make it 33-14 after Gullatta's fourth conversion of the day.
West Chester got a try from Cameron Morrongiello (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) in the 68th minute to draw within 33-19. But, that was as close as the Golden Rams would get the rest of the way. Lander added two trys by Ema Tai in the final six minutes and Gullatta booted her fifth conversion of the game after the first of those trys to make it 45-19.
