Men's Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Rain Soaked Purple and Gold Invitational

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The West Chester men's track and field squad opened its Spring 2024 Outdoor season on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon inside John A. Farrell Stadium for the annual Purple and Gold Invitational. David Burnshaw (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) captured a victory in the javelin and turned in a pair of top-10 performances on the track to help lead the West Chester University men's track and field squad to a Purple and Gold Invitational victory on Saturday afternoon.

WEST CHESTER, Pa.-
The West Chester men's track and field squad opened its Spring 2024 Outdoor season on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon inside John A. Farrell Stadium for the annual Purple and Gold Invitational. David Burnshaw (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) captured a victory in the javelin and turned in a pair of top-10 performances on the track to help lead the West Chester University men's track and field squad to a Purple and Gold Invitational victory on Saturday afternoon.

West Chester scored 110 points in an abbreviated meet on Saturday afternoon, cut short by torrential rains, which enveloped the Delaware Valley throughout much of the day to finish first out of 18 teams.

West Chester started its day with a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay, clocking a time of 43.97 seconds.

Philip Smith (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) picked up a victory in the 1500, registering a time of 4 minutes and 13.76 seconds, while Jason Vogt (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) was close behind in fifth in 4:22.36.

David Burnshaw (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) finished second in the 110-hurdles, crossing the line in 19.33 seconds, while Jack Wasserman (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) paced the Golden Rams in the 400, finishing second in 53.06 seconds.

Burnshaw also led the way in the 100-meter dash, finishing eight in 11.72 seconds, while Joshua Eng (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham) was ninth in 11.73.

Von Curry (Glenside, Pa./Abington Friends) led West Chester in the 800 with a fourth-place finish in 2:19.68, while Ian Lengua (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby), Jaden Mercy (West Chester, Pa./Rustin), and Andrew Mancini (Boothwyn, Pa./Salesianum) also finished in the top-10, finishing seventh, eighth, and 10th in times of 2:33.76, 2:34.98, and 2:38.42, respectively.

Ashton Barnes (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) led the way in the 200, finishing first in 23.01 seconds, while Shane Mosley (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and Kaleb Brown (Reading, Pa./Wilson) finished second and third in 23.16 and 23.55 seconds. Eng and Nick Tran (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) rounded out the Golden Rams in the top-10, finishing sixth and eighth in times of 25.39 and 27.88, respectively.

In field events, Thomas Smith (Wallingford, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) won the shot put with a mark of 42 feet 8 inches (13.0 meters), while Derrick Lukomski Pizzo (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) was second at 41-9 ¾ (12.74m). Burnshaw continued his big day on the field event side, posting a victory in the javelin with a mark of 139-0 (42.36m).
