West Chester Men See Season Come To A Close on Penalty Kicks

WATERBURY, CONN. – West Chester and Post battled to a scoreless draw for 110 minutes, but Post advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament after winning in penalty kicks, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at LeMoy Field.

West Chester (11-5-5) had a few opportunities in regulation, and two more looks in the second OT period, but Post (13-1-6) held on to get to the PKs.

"I knew these were two good defensive teams and there weren't going to be too many scoring opportunities," West Chester head coach Michael Benn said afterwards. "Unfortunately, it just didn't work out for us."

Without either team connecting for a goal, the game went into penalty kicks. Post's 6-foot, 6-inch keeper made three saves on West Chester's five shots, and one hit the crossbar. R-Sr., Josh Daniels (Fleetwood, Pa./Oley Valley) converted his kick. West Chester R-Sr., GK Daniel Good (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) made one save, and Post was wide on another opportunity. However, their second and fourth shooters converted their kicks for the 2-1 victory.

R-Fr., forward, Peter Tichy (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), put one just over the crossbar two minutes into the second overtime, and junior defender, Cooper Jackson (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had a header go wide moments later, for West Chester's best opportunities in the OT.

The Golden Rams held their own on Saturday for the most part. Daniels sent a laser in that just missed the far left corner high about midway through the first half for the visitor's best chance.

"I'd take my team over any in the country, any day," Good said after the game. "They played a phenomenal game. I'm proud of the way we worked over the last three or four months."

"I'm so proud of them," Benn added. "I couldn't have asked for anything more from them. Their organization, their effort and everything that we've worked on all year long. They performed in the biggest moment of the season."

Post advance to take on the winner of Bloomsburg vs. Franklin Pierce, which was played late Saturday afternoon.
