West Chester Picks Up Second Sweep of Mansfield in as Many Days
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST CHESTER, PA – West Chester scored 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep over visiting Mansfield to claim all four games of the season series, which was played in its entirety at Serpico Stadium this weekend.
West Chester (22-5-1, 11-5) ran its win streak to 12 games and sits in third place in the league standings while Mansfield (7-22, 3-17) has now dropped 10 straight.
The Golden Rams scored all nine of their runs in the first two innings of game one and rolled to a 9-1 victory behind the strong left arm of Julian Costa (Mantua, N.J./Clearview), who improved to 4-2 on the hill. The Mountaineers finally pushed across a run in the seventh to ruin the shutout. Costa pitched five scoreless innings, scattered four hits, and struck out seven.
West Chester again started strong in game two, plating 11 runs in the first inning and five more in the third as the nightcap was never in doubt. The Golden Rams took a 19-3 decision in that ballgame.
Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with three runs scored and two RBI in the second game. Sean Szestowicki (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) went 3-for-5 with four RBI in the second game.
Starter Drew Simpson (Hockessin, Del./Delaware Military) went three innings in a game that became a bullpen outing for the Golden Rams' staff with such a big lead. Four relievers paraded to the mound for one inning each behind Simpson.
West Chester will finish its Bill Giles Classic first-round contest at Wilmington tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. The game is currently tied at 7-7 in the Top of the ninth inning. The eventual winner will move on to the Bill Giles Championship Game, which will be played at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday.
After that, the Golden Rams will return home for a non-league contest against Adelphi at Serpico Stadium on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
