Hemingway and Mazurek Take Major Awards in PSAC Postseason Announcement
LOCK HAVEN, PA – Sr., McKenzie Hemingway (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) and head coach Steve Mazurek among the honorees in the 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) postseason swimming awards announced Friday afternoon.
Hemingway was named the Swimmer of the Year while Mazurek was named the Coach of the Year on the women's side once again.
Hemingway was a two-time All-American at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships earlier this month. The three-event qualifier for nationals placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke while posting the fastest time in the PSAC of 1 minute, 1.81 seconds during a swim-off to qualify for the 'A' final and earn one of her All-America citations. She was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay that earned All-America status. She finished 12th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.49 that was also the fastest in the PSAC this year.
The senior was also a PSAC individual champion in the 100 breast while swimming four relays that brought home conference championships (400 medley, 200 free, 400 free and 800 free).
Hemingway is the 20th Golden Rams swimmer to take home Swimmer of the Year plaudits in the conference since the award was first handed out in 1989. A total of 11 different WCU swimmers have won the award over that span.
Mazurek guided the women's team to its third straight conference crown and 17th in the last 18 years while claiming the school's 21st title overall. Mazurek was the mastermind behind both the men's and women's teams repeating as PSAC champions in February. He also led the women to a 13th-place showing at nationals in March.
Mazurek picks up his sixth Coach of the Year certificate in seven seasons at the helm of the women's squad. The only year he did not win the award (2021) West Chester did not compete due to Covid restrictions. It is the third year in a row that Mazurek has won the coach of the year on the women's side, and coupled with his three awards on the men's side, marks his ninth coach of the year nod overall.
