Casey Vaughan Named PSAC East Athlete of the Week
LOCK HAVEN, PA – West Chester University junior Casey Vaughan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division athlete of the week it was announced by that organization Monday afternoon.
Vaughan earns his first weekly honor by hitting .333 (4-for-12) during a weekend series with No. 10 East Stroudsburg. But it was his performance at the end of game one and the beginning of game two on Saturday at home that helped the Golden Rams to a doubleheader sweep of the Warriors and a 3-1 series victory in the conference tilts.
With the game knotted up at 1-1, Vaughan led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle off ESU reliever Nick McAuliffe. West Chester eventually went on to win the game, 2-1, in walkoff fashion with Vaughan's pinch runner scoring the decisive run.
Then, in game two, Vaughan stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the first. He dropped in a single down the right-field line that was fair by just inches and cleared the bases. When ESU's right fielder threw wild to third trying to catch Vaughan, who was legging out a three-run triple, he got up and raced home for the fifth run of the opening frame.
Those two hits played an integral role in West Chester's sweep on Saturday. Vaughan started the game-winning, walk-off rally in the seventh inning of game one and then provided the big hit in the bottom of the first of game two. The 5-0 lead was too much for ESU to overcome in the nightcap.
Vaughan and the rest of the Golden Rams diamondmen return to action on Thursday at home at Serpico Stadium for a doubleheader against No. 12 Millersville beginning at 1 p.m.
